Although take up of cycling is growing, bicycle networks in metropolitan areas are typically fragmented and disjointed. The lack of quality cycling infrastructure and the perceived dangers associated with mixing with general traffic are major hurdles in suppressing cycling and the benefits associated with higher levels of cycling.

Using emerging techniques in quantifying cycling demand and cycling benefits, AECOM undertook a cost benefit analysis on the proposed Inner Sydney Strategic Cycle Network, a network of 284 kilometres of separated and shared user cycle paths.

In the presentation, AECOM will demonstrate how these emerging techniques were used to estimate demand and evaluate the benefits associated with higher take-up of cycling

The full implementation of the Inner Sydney Regional Bicycle Network is predicted to generate net economic benefits of $507 million in today’s prices at a benefit cost ratio of 3.88.
